Mother's Day card - a sweet footprint keepsake perfect for mamas and Grandmas

Footprints just make the sweetest crafts - and they are such a lovely keepsake of the tiny feet as they grow so quickly! Many momstown programs, including Baby Basics, make art part of the fun - and for Mother's Day some of our littlest momstown kids made Mother's Day cards with a tiny footprint built right in!

mother's Day footprint card

momstown Mississauga's little ones were front and centre - and (mostly) willing participants in the craft creation!

The little feet were painted, pressed onto paper - and then the 'best' print was cut out and glued to the front of the card.

Inside, we glued in a poem:

Mommy, I love you
For all that you do.
I'll kiss you and hug you
'Cause you love me, too.
You feed me and need me
To teach you to play,
So smile 'cause I love you
On this Mother's Day

If you choose to do this with a handprint instead - here's a sweet poem to accompany:

Ten tiny fingers,
that always want to play,
That never stop exploring
that wonder of today,
Ten tiny fingers,
that from the very start,
Will reach out for tomorrow yet always hold your heart
Happy Mother’s Day

Great creativity from momstown Mississauga and a wonderful craft you can do at home with your little ones - just in time for Mother's Day!

Spring Robin Footprint Craft

spring robin craft

Have you spotted a robin yet? Word is, if you spot one first it’s good luck! Let’s make some spring robins to remind us what they look like.

Supplies you will need:

•    Construction paper – brown, red, blue, robin egg’s blue, orange beak
•    Nest fabric, scraps of brown paper, hay…
•    Glue, scissors
•    Bead for eye (black) or marker

1.    Trace the child’s foot on the brown paper, this will be the bulk of the robin’s body. Cut out.

2.    Cut a red robin’s belly out to fill in the space from the foot arch and robin’s body.

3.    Cut scraps up to create the nest. And cut robin egg’s blue circles out to used for any surprise.

4.    Start to glue and create!

Another super cute idea is to create the whole footprint robin with paint! Use a baby or child's foot for a paint footprint like momstown Newmarket-Aurora did in their Baby Basics program - what a cute spring painting or card to make for someone!

Footprint Valentine's Cards

momstown Ottawa moms and babies met this week to make Valentine's Day cards!

Homemade Valentine's Day cards are so much more special than the store bought kind and can be very simple in both idea and execution.  Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about expensive chocolates and dinners.  It’s about slowing down and remembering to tell all the special people in your life that you love and appreciate them.  Nothing says love better than a homemade gift!

My favorite way to do this is by making hand made cards. Even babies can help make adorable footprint cards perfect for your significant other or extended family.

1.  Take your baby’s foot and paint with red non-toxic paint.  This card is a little trickier than others because we’ll be painting both feet. Be aware of how squirmy your baby is and what materials are around you that you don’t want any paint to get on! Have the wipes ready!

2. Begin by painting your baby’s left foot and stamp it on the page on an angle. Clean the foot. Then paint your baby’s right foot and stamp it on an opposite angle creating a heart.

3.  Complete the card by adding decorations with whatever other materials you’d like to use to decorate your card. We used glitter, markers and paint.

4.  Don’t forget to write your baby’s age and what month it is on the card so you don’t forget later.

Adorable Footprint Snowmen, Polar Bears and Penguins Craft

There is nothing cuter than creating artwork with your sweet child's footprints!  Our Hamilton momstown mamas had a great time painted their child's feet and turning it into a winter masterpiece!

1.  Using washable paint in black (penguin) or white (polar bears and snowmen), paint your child's feet with a foam brush.

DIY: Baby's First Christmas Footprint Plates

This week at momstown Edmonton Baby Basics program we made adorable Christmas Footprint Plates! The mamas love to make cute keepsakes for their babies so we made a perfect gift for grandparents! This craft was the perfect keepsake to mark baby's first Christmas.

Supplies:

White Plates
Red & Green Permanent Markers
Red & Green Acrylic Paint
Small Paintbrushes
Sponge Paintbrushes

We found doing the footprint first gave the best results, then adding the writing with the markers.

We added the bows using a small paint brush and the polka dot border using round foamy paintbrushes.

I will warn that these plates are for decorative purposes only. You may be able to seal them with a varnish of some kind.

Footprint Turkey Wreaths: An Easy Thanksgiving Craft and Keepsake for Kids

Thanksgiving is a great time to get the kids involved in crafts that are also keepsakes. After all, one of the things we are most thankful for is our friends and family. Hand and footprint crafts capture a moment in time, and remind us of how small we were, and how much we have grown. This footprint turkey wreath is an easy fall craft that your toddler or preschooler can make now, and that can serve as a decoration for years to come.

Here is what you need to make your own Thanksgiving Footprint Turkey Wreath:

  • a paper plate
  • brown construction paper
  • scraps of yellow and orange construction paper
  • squares or scraps of red, orange, yellow, and brown tissue paper
  • a black marker
  • scissors
  • glue

1. Cut the centre out of a paper plate (an adult's job).  Spread glue onto the paper plate, and cover with squares of tissue paper:

3. Trace your foot onto brown construction paper.  Cut out.  Use your marker to add two eyes, and glue on a orange beak.

4. Cut two long strips of yellow construciton paper, and accordian fold each one.  Glue to the bottom of the turkey's body to form its legs.

5. Glue the turkey's body to the bottom of your wreath, and hang your wreath on the door.  Happy Thanksgiving!
