Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day Crafts, Activities and Snack Ideas

Every February 2nd, the world waits to see if the groundhog is going to see its shadow.

According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

Since momstown is the go-to place for all holidays, we have gathered our favourite crafts, poems, activities and snacks to celebrate Groundhog's Day with your kids!

Footprint Groundhogs (Thanks to momstown Central Alberta)

1.  Create a footprint groundhog by painting brown paint on your child's foot.

2.  Use hands painted with green paint to create the grass around the groundhog.

3.  Complete the face with markers or googly eyes.

I'M A LITTLE GROUNDHOG

(sung to "I'm a Little Teapot")

I'm a little groundhog,
Furry and Brown.
When winter comes
I sleep underground.
I'm curled up
As cozy as can be.
When it's spring,
Please wake me!

HERE'S A LITTLE GROUNDHOG

(sung to "I'm A Little Teapot")

Here's a little groundhog, furry and brown,
He's popping up to look around.
If he sees his shadow, down he'll go.
Then six more weeks of winter
 - oh, no!

Groundhog Day Puppet

Is Groundhog Day a holiday really? Is it craft worthy? Uh, yes!!

The story is the groundhog pops out of his burrow to look for his shadow. A little tough to explain to a young child why this may or may not mean winter is over... The simple part is all about the groundhog and his burrow. So - let’s make one!

What you need:

  • empty toilet paper roll (the burrow!)
  • cotton balls, tin foil, white felt (snow & ice)
  • glue
  • brown construction paper & googly eye (the groundhog)
  • popsicle stick (the puppet handle)

Have fun decorating the toilet paper roll with “snow” and making it very wintery. Any aged child will have fun doing this as it can be as simple or as snowy as the interest is.

Cut up a groundhog shape (make sure it’s small enough to go in and out of the toilet paper roll) and glue on an eye to SEE the shadow. Glue the Popsicle stick onto the cut-out with enough left as a handle.

When the glue dries – have fun playing with your new puppet. Get out a flashlight and shine it at the puppet and make a shadow on the wall for more fun. Happy Groundhog Day from all of us moms at momstown!
