Flower garden with craft odds and ends

Sometimes it's time to clean out the craft bin and get creative! The momstown crafters got busy making a spring garden scene with all kinds of mixed media.

garden with foam

What you need:

  • Cotton balls
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Foam
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors

Though we used a lot of different materials, you can use whatever you have handy to create a garden like this one. We've got cotton ball clouds, popsicle and tissue trees, foamy flowers, and a construction paper sun!

Using scissors helps children develop fine motor skills - foam is a great medium to practice on. It glues easily to construction paper and has texture kids enjoy working with.

v is for vase

momstown's crafters found some flowered wrapping paper scraps - so we recycled them and turned them into flower for our v is for vase craft!

v is for vase

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Gluestick
  • Wrapping Paper or flyers/magazine pictures of flowers

v is for vaseCut out a lower case 'v' from construction paper. Have your child help - v's have lots of straight lines and are easier to cut than most letters.

Glue the v onto another piece of construction paper. This makes the vase.

v is for vaseCut out flowers from gift wrap (or you could draw them if you don't have any, or look through magazines for some) and glue on inside the 'vase'.

V is for Victory! And a job well done.

You can also use leftover gift wrap in our g is for gift craft or f is for fish activity.

G is for Garden

We turned a letter G into a full-fledged garden!

Our garden is complete with flowers, grass, sunshine, butterflies, and even some rain!

G is for garden

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Pipe cleaners
  • G cut-outs
  • Markers
  • Butterflies (optional)

G is for garden

Draw the upper-case G with marker. Then start building your garden! We cut out strips of green construction paper for grass, used pipe cleaners for flower stems, and "G"s for flowers!

Then we added a few ingredients that all gardens need... sunshine, and rain! We talked about another 'G' word - 'Grow'! It was a great opportunity to talk about living things, and how they all need food, water, and air to survive.

Remember that "G" words have either a hard G (like garden, grow) or a soft G (like gym, gerbil). Start with the hard-G sound when you are introducing letter sounds, just to keep it consistent!
