Kindergarten Graduation Songs and Poems

Is there anything cuter than seeing your little kindergartener singing on stage Is your child the one that belts it out or stands silently (even though they sing everyday at home)?

kindergarten graduation songs

This song is one of our favourites.  Fun for kids, and nostalgic for the moms and dads!

Summer Nights- Kindergarten Version (sung to "Summer Lovin'" from Grease)

Kindergarten had me a blast.
Kindergarten went by so fast.
Made some friends cute as can be.  Had a teacher, crazy for me.

Kindergarten went by so fast, but now it's time to go.
Oh well, Oh well, Oh well ugh

Tell me more, Tell me more Do you remember last fall?
Tell me more, Tell me more, we were only this tall.
Ooh bompbomp Ooh bompbomp Ooh bompbomp yeah

All year long we learned and had fun.
Can't believe we got it all done.
We had small groups in reading each day.
Morning message, smart board, hooray!

Kindergarten, we learned so much, but now it's time to go.
Oh well, Oh well, Oh well ugh.

Tell me more, Tell me more, about the friends you have made.
Tell me more, Tell me more, will we have fun in first grade?
Ooh bompbomp Ooh bompbomp Ooh bompbomp yeah

Kindergarten, this is where it ends.
But don't worry, we'll still be friends.
Wonder what we'll learn next year.

Kindergarten drifted away
Ooh, ooh, but...
We're first graders no-oooowwwwww

Time to Say Goodbye Poem

Now I know my ABCs,
Colours, shapes and days.
I sang songs, learned poems, rhymes and fingerplays.

I played outside on sunny days and inside when it rained.
My little hands and little feet were busy every day.

I kept my teacher on her toes.
She tied my shoes, combed my hair and even wiped by nose.

But now it's time to say "good-bye" to all my kindergarten friends.
School is over, summer's here,
But learning never ends!

Making a Chinese Drum

Chinese New Year is for celebrating and making noise!  One traditional instrument is this type of Chinese drum.  Kids love the sounds that it makes and the way in which they play this fun instrument.  Learning about Chinese New Year, try these great foods and other crafts for kids.

 chinese drum craft for kids

Materials:

paper plates
popsicle stick
string
beads
hole punch
glue
scissors
optional for decorating:

paint
stickers
construction paper
glitter

Instructions:

1. Lay one paper plate face up and glue the popsicle stick to the edge of it to make a handle.

2.  Put a line of glue all around the rim of the plate and place the other plate face down on top of it.  Allow the glue to dry.

3. Once the glue has dried punch 2 holes along the rim of the plate on opposites sides of each other.

4. String some beads onto two pieces of string, then thread the string through the holes and tie a knot.

5. Now you can shake the drum back and forth.  The beads will hit either side of the plate and make a "drumming" noise.

Fire Truck Songs and Fingerplays

Whether you are working on a firefighter, fire trucks, or community helper unit with your class of preschoolers, or you simply have a child who loves fire trucks and dreams of being a fireman one day, these firefighter and fire truck songs and fingerplays are sure to be popular with your group of kids!

Fingerplays:

Five Little Firefighters

Five little firefighters sleeping in their bed
The first one said, "Put your helmet on your head!"
The second one said, "Down the pole we'll slide."
The third one said, "Get ready to ride!"
The fourth one said, "Put your gas mask on your nose."
The fifth one said, "I'll grab the hose!"
Then Woooo went the siren and out went the fire
And the five little firemen could finally retire!

5 Great Big Fire Trucks

5 great big fire trucks, waiting at the hall
One goes out to answer a call
With siring sounds and lights on bright
Off he goes, there’s a fire to fight

No little fire trucks waiting at the hall
But here they come back to their stalls
With sirens quiet and all made right
5 great big fire trucks say good night

Five Little Firefighters

Five little firefighters
(show five fingers)
Sleeping in a row.
(rest cheeks on hands & close eyes)
Ring goes the bell-
Down the pole they go.
(Pretend to slide down pole)
They jump on the engine
(Jump up)
And put out the fire.
(Pretend to squirt with a hose)
Now they're back home-
My, but they are tired.
(Stretch and yawn.)

Songs:

The Wheels on the Fire Truck
(Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)

The wheels on the firetruck go round and round
Round and round
Round and round
The wheels on the firetruck go round and round, all through the town

The engine on the truck goes vroom, vroom, vroom
Vroom, vroom, vroom
Vroom, vroom, vroom
The engine on the truck goes vroom, vroom, vroom, all through the town

The siren on the truck goes whoo, whoo, whoo
Whoo whoo, whoo, whoo
The siren on the truck goes whoo, whoo, whoo, all through the town

The seatbelts on the truck go click, click,
Click, click, click
Click, click, click
The seatbelts on the bus goes click, click, click, all through the town

The ladder on the truck goes up and down
Up and down
Up and down
The ladder on the truck goes up and down, all through the town

The dog on the truck goes woof, woof, woof
Woof, woof, woof
Woof, woof, woof
The dog on the truck goes woof, woof, woof, all through the town

The hose on the truck goes spray, spray, spray
Spray, spray, spray
Spray, spray, spray

If your clothes should catch on fire,
Stop, Drop, and Roll

I'm a Great Big Fire Truck
(Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)

Here on my side my hose is found
If there is a fire, I’ll rush to help
Listen up, you’ll hear my sound

Here is my ladder, here is my light
If there is a fire I’ll rush there
And spray on water to make it right

Make a Microphone Craft

It is no surprise that childrens' television shows that feature music and an educational message, such as The Doodlebops on Kids' CBC, are a hit with both children and their parents. Whether it is banging on kitchen pots and pans, singing along in the car, or playing a toy piano, kids are naturally drawn to music, and music has been shown to have a significant positive impact on kids. Amongst other things, music has been shown to enhance language development, creativity, concentration, and coordination, foster perseverance and boost information retention.

If you have ever watched The Doodlebops with your kids, the chances are good that at some point they have hopped up, grabbed an imaginary microphone, and rocked along to the music. With this easy microphone craft, kids can make their own personal microphones to use at their next living room concert.

To make your own microphone, you will need:

  • a paper tube roll
  • aluminum foil
  • liquid glue
  • tape
  • black paint
  • stickers, metallic markers, glitter or other decorations, if desired
  • scissors

1. Trim paper tube roll to desired size (we used a tube from a paper towel roll, and cut approximately 1/3 off the end)

2. Cut a vertical slit in the bottom 1/4 of the tube.  Overlap cut portions of tube, creating a slight cone shape, and secure with tape on the inside of the roll.

3. Paint tube black (alternately, colour with markers, crayons etc.)

4. While paint is drying, form the top of your microphone by taking a large piece of aluminum foil, and scrunching it into a ball.

5. Once tube is dry, use liquid glue to attach the top of your microphone to the paper tube base.  If desired, decorate the base with stickers, metallic pens, glitter, or other embellishments.

6. Sing along to your favourite songs, or make up some music that is all your own!

Dance with the Doodlebops and homemade shakers

momstown kids love The Doodlebops on Kids' CBC! They get the kids up dancing, singing, and moving with a great combination of music and stories.

simple shakers

You can make these simple shakers with just a few household items - and they're great for toddlers and preschoolers to play with!

What you need:

  • Baby food jars (or other small jar - water bottles also work well!)
  • Construction paper
  • Tape
  • Glue
  • Dry pasta, rice, or beads

This is a great 'fill' activity for little hands. Have kids transfer beads or pasta from a bowl into the jars. Then put the lids on with some glue on the threading (this prevents little ones from opening the lids!). You can experiment with the different sounds the shakers will make when they have more or less pasta inside.

Then it's time to decorate - we used momstown colours and decorated with white construction paper base and circles glued on. The Doodlebops are orange, yellow, pink and blue - you could make one shaker for each Doodlebop!

Turn the music on (check out great Doodlebops video) and get moving and shaking!

Snowman music shakers

momstown loves crafts that combine music and art - here's a great one created by our very own momstown Calgary North!

snowman shaker

Here's what you need to create a Snowman Shaker of your own:

  •     a small plastic jar with a lid
  •     a styrofoam or other solid ball
  •     one white sock
  •     one patterned or solid coloured sock
  •     dried beans or rice
  •     buttons
  •     a rubber band
  •     string
  •     scraps of felt
  •     scissors
  •     a glue gun

snowman shaker
1. Fill the plastic jar approximately 1/3 full with dried beans or rice. Glue the lid securely onto the jar.

2. Glue the ball onto the lid of the jar.

3. Stretch the white sock over the lid and ball, and wrap the elastic tightly around the top of the sock.  Trim off the excess fabric from the sock.

4. Stretch coloured sock over the top of the ball. Secure hat to the snowman with glue, or a few stitches. Trim the coloured sock a few inches longer than the white sock , and wrap a piece of string in a coordinating colour around the coloured sock, over top of where the elastic is. Make several vertical cuts in the coloured sock, cutting down to the string.  Fluff up the strips so that they look like a pom-pom on the hat.

5. Tie a thin strip of fabric around the snowman's neck to create a scarf. Glue two black buttons onto the face to create eyes, and three buttons down the front of the snowman's body.  Glue a triangular scrap of orange felt to create a carrot nose.  Glue a piece of black string, or white and black twine onto the snowman's face to create a mouth. (Note: if you are making the shaker for a child under three, you may want to consider using markers, or small fabric cut outs to create the snowman's face and accessories, as the buttons may come attached and form a choking hazard).

6. Turn on some holiday music, and shake your snowman to the beat!
