Snowman craft from cotton pads

momstown loves finding household items and incorporating them into crafts. Today we used cotton pads (used for makeup removal!) and turned them into snowmen!

cotton pad snowmen

So neat to see how differently three kids make the same craft! The cotton pads add texture and make it look like real snow.

What you need:

  • Cotton pads
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Any scrap wrapping paper, ribbons, shiny paper

cotton pad snowmenHave kids cut out circles to form the snowmen (good cutting skill practice!) and glue them onto the construction paper. Then, glue on the cotton pads to create texture and a snowy fluffy effect. You can pull on the pads to fluff them up a bit!

cotton pad snowmenAdd googly eyes, use scrap paper to make a hat, scarf, and any other embellishments your snowman may need!

momstown has so many snowman crafts - there is bound to be one your child will enjoy!

Snowman canvas art

This adorable canvas art came home from school with my child but  we had to share! It's great  example of a multi-step craft. momstown loves the vibrant colours and creativity that each child brought to these whimsical snowmen. Younger children could take a break between steps - it is all up to the creator!

What you need:

  • Paintable canvas (available at dollar stores)
  • Blue and white paint
  • Sponges cut into circles
  • Foamy shapes
  • Sharpie markers

Step 1: have children paint the canvas blue, leaving a strip a the bottom white (to represent the snow).

Step 2: Stamp with white paint and circle sponges, to create snowmen with 2 or 3 stacked circles.

Step 3: Decorate snowmen with foamy shapes for hats, scarves, buttons, etc. The peel-back sticky ones are easiest for kids to work with.

Step 4: Use a sharpie marker to add eyes, nose and mouth.

Gallery-worthy work - and each picture will be unique!

Canvas art may sound fancy, but momstown's made it work with kids of all ages:

Q tip snowflake craft

Q-tips make a great craft material. momstown's turned them into snowflakes for an easy craft that even toddlers can do!

q tip snowflakes

q tip snowflakesWhat you need:

  • Q tips
  • Glue
  • Cotton balls (optional)
  • Black construction paper

q tip snowflakes This is the point where we figured out that you need to lay down the glue for the toddlers!

q tip snowflakesThat's better!

If you have a young child glue the pattern for them and they can attach the Q tips. Older children can put the glue on themselves. Add cotton balls 'snowballs' and you've got a great winter scene!

momstown has used Q-tips for all sorts of craft ideas, like:

Mix and Match Snowman activity

momstown's combining a winter favourite - snowmen - with a mix and match activity to try with your preschooler!

mix and match snowman

We used the same snowman base and gave him different clothes to create all kinds of mix and match ideas!

mix and match snowmanWhat you need:

  • Cardboard or cardstock (for base)
  • Construction paper in various colours (at least 4)
  • Scissors
  • Re-usable adhesive like Blu-tack

mix and match snowmanFirst, cut out three circles and tack them onto cardboard or cardstock. If you cut them out for a younger child, make sure they do the work figuring out smallest to largest and stick them on themselves.

mix and match snowmanThe first snowman we made had an orange hat, buttons, and arms. This is a great way to teach or reinforce colour matching as you create different 'outfits' for your snowman. Tack the pieces on using blu-tack so they can be easily removed.

Then you can create different matching outfits for your snowman and have your child dress him up!

mix and match snowmanOnce you've got a variety of colours and pieces, your child can have fun mixing and matching.

Store away in a file folder or ziplock bag, and bring out for mix and match fun anytime!

Sugar snowman craft

This great kids' activity from momstown combines sensory play (sugar!) with fine motor (glue!)- to make a very sweet snowman craft.

sugar snowman

What you need:

  • Sugar
  • Glue
  • Glitter glue or markers

sugar snowman Make three circles in glue to form the snowman. You can do this step for your child, or have them give it a try. It doesn't matter if they are perfect, any excess glue will just catch the sugar 'snow'. You could trace the circles first and then have your child follow them with the glue.

sugar snowmanPour sugar over top of the glue and swish around. The sugar will stick to the glue and look like snow!

sugar snowman Use glitter glue to complete the picture (hat, arms, eyes, mouth). Then tip the paper and remove the excess sugar.

How sweet is he?

I is for Icicle craft

momstown loves alphabet crafts - and this winter-inspired Icicle is quick and easy!

i is for icicle

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • Marker
  • Glitter glue

i is for icicle

Draw a block letter I (upper case) on a piece of construction paper.

Show your child how to 'drip' the glitter glue (using the squeezable ones works best) to create icicles. This is a good fine motor activity! White, silver, or blue glitter glue will give the most icicle-like effect!

Alphabet crafts are a fun way to practice letter recognition, talk about letter sounds, and get crafty at the same time! momstown's got them all from A to Z and then some.
