n is for night alphabet craft for preschoolers and toddlers

Lower case letters are taking over the momstown craft room! Our latest is n is for night - a simple alphabet activity that can engage kids of all ages, and get them practicing their letter sounds too.

 

n is for night

 

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • Shiny paper (we used wrapping paper for the 'n')
  • Scissors
  • Glitter glue
  • Glue stick

 

n is for nightCut out stars and moons and a lower case 'n' and glue onto construction paper. We used blue gift wrap for the 'n' that looked kind of like a night sky.

 

 

 

n is for nightCutting and gluing helps children develop fine motor skills, and having them design their own sky builds their creativity!

 

 

 

 

 

 

n is for nightNow it's time to add sparkle with that glitter glue! Yes, it's messy but most kids just love it - so have fun and make the picture as sparkly as a night sky.

How to make a handprint spider craft

Halloween brings along a lot of spiders! OR depending on which nursery rhyme you have in mind,  these spiders could be from The Itsy Bitsy Spider  or Little Miss Muffet! How cute are these little spiders we found at nursery school? momstown loves this simple craft that can be used to create a whole web of spiders!

The itsy bitsy spider
Climbed up the waterspout

Down came the rain
And washed the spider out.

Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain

So the itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the spout again!

What you need:

  • black paint
  • construction paper
  • googly eyes
  • string for web optional - depending where you plan to decorate!

 

Have child paint his or her hand black (4 fingers and hand, no thumb) press on to paper, back to back so that each side has 4 legs and combined they have 8 legs!

Add googly eyes and you've got a very cute handprint spider. If you make lots of them, you can put them up on a bulletin board, window, or door, and then use string to create a 'web' around them!

 

Little Miss Muffet, sat on a tuffet,
Eating her curds and whey;
Along came a spider, who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away.

Baa Baa Black Sheep

momstown is still on our Nursery Rhyme kick this month!  Did you know that there are a lot of nursery rhymes with sheep in them? There's "Baa Baa Black Sheep", "Little Bo Peep", "Little Boy Blue", and "Mary Had a Little Lamb"! Can you think of more? There may be some...

After reading all the nursery rhymes about sheepin our momstown Oshawa-Port Perry chapter, they made our own sheep! The children were given a cut out of a sheep that they covered with glue and stuck cotton balls and googly eyes too.

This is a quick and easy craft to prepare and children of all ages can participate. The picture of the sheep craft below was done by my a 2 year old. She also made another that had about eight eyes, but hey - creativity is good! :)

Don't forget to sing the rhyme while you're working together!

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.

One for my master,
One for my dame,
And one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.

Little Bo Peep Handprint Lamb

We've got nursery rhymes on the brain here at momstown, and lots of ideas to bring them to life with fun and easy crafts, like this take on Little Bo Peep's sheep!

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone and they'll come home,
Bringing their tails behind them.

This one has lots of sensory fun as well - from painting hands to fluffy cotton balls!

What you need: paint, paint brush, construction paper, glue, and cotton balls.

Paint the little hand - kids love this step!

Have your child press their handprint onto the construction paper to make the lambs. Glue on cotton balls to make the fluffy lamb fleece. In no time, you've got a whole flock!

Three Blind Mice egg carton craft

Nursery Rhymes are great thought-starters for creative craft ideas! We created our own "Three Blind Mice" at momstown using egg cartons!

What you need: an egg carton, pompoms, foam, pipe cleaners, yarn, googly eyes and glue!

 

Cut one 'egg' section for each mouse. Glue on pompom nose, yarn for fur, and googly eyes. Cut slits in the top and insert foam triangles for ears. Poke a pipecleaner through the back for a tail!

 

Quick and easy, and you can practice your "Three Blind Mice" song rendition and teach it to your kids!

 

Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?

Twinkle Little Star Mobile

You and your child can create a Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star mobile with this fun craft activity from momstown.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky!
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!

 

You'll need: scissors, glue, ribbon, star stencils (cookie cutters work well!), tin foil, a coat hanger, tissue paper, and stiff paper like cardstock or heavy construction paper.

 

 

Use the cookie cutters to trace stars on the construction paper. Your child can try doing the tracing as well - helps to practice pencil grip.

 

 

Getting some great cutting practice with these stars! Have your child cut them out, or help them if they are younger.

 

 

Cut tissue paper and tin foil into small squares, then 'scrunch' them up and glue them on to add three dimensions to the stars! Fun sensory activity, especially with the tin foil.

 

 

Attach ribbon to each star and hang from the coat hanger. We added an extra touch and wound pipe cleaners around the hanger to give it some extra colour. Now it's ready to decorate your child's room, or any other room in the house that needs a little twinkle!
