Tire tread painting

Have 'retired' toy cars and trucks cluttering up your house? Pull them out and use them for this simple and fun painting activity. It's a great playgroup craft idea to pull car loving kids to the craft table and it was a hit at a momstown Burlington transportation themed event.

What you need:

  • Small cars and trucks
  • Shallow dish or paper plate
  • Paper towels
  • Paint
  • Construction paper

Fold a paper towel into quarters and lay it in the bottom of the shallow dish. Pour paint into the centre of the paper towel to make it into a stamp pad.

Dip the wheels of the car or truck into the paint. Roll it around on the paper towel to wipe off excess paint, then roll the vehicle onto the paper to make a unique print!

Use different sizes of wheels and different types of treads, so children can see the different prints they make!

Salt Dough Cars & Trains

We made bake-able 'playdough' with salt, flour.. rolled it out into vehicle shapes, baked and then painted them. I tried to find a digger cookie cutter (no luck)  so we used train and car cutters and painted them yellow & black to pretend they were construction vehicles. :)

Recipe for Easy no-cook Salt "dough"

Stir together 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 1/2 cups cold water (maybe a bit less), 2 Tbsp oil.

Stir until a soft dough forms. Then knead, roll and cut into shapes. Bake 300 degrees for about an hour. You can add food colouring to the water or you can paint when cool. If you paint, spray with shellac when dry to help keep the paint from peeling.

My own Yellow School Bus

My kids love to see yellow school buses so we made some at home.

egg carton school bus

Supplies:

-          Egg carton top (not where the eggs go)

-          Yellow & black paint + brushes

-          Black construction paper circles for wheels

-          Cut up some pictures of faces from magazines or family photos for ‘faces’ on the bus

My 20 month old loved this craft as it was easy for him to participate and he got a great result with a small amount of attention! This picture was his 4 year ols sisters but his looked almost as good!

Paint the top of the egg carton yellow and add some black elements. When dry glue on wheels and faces.

Done!! Their very own school bus.

momstown Barrie had a great time celebrating Back to School together with this craft at a recent playdate.

Digger Art

Boys love diggers! (Girls do too!)

Here’s a great way to get your lover of diggers to the craft table with a fun, interactive and maybe a little messy art project. Complete with “dirt”!!

digger craft sensoryFind some printables (or draw them) of his favourite machines: backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks. Colour them in  and then cut them out.

Glue the digger onto a piece of construction paper. Then put lots of sloppy glue (pretty thickly) onto the places where the “dirt” is going to go.

You can use anything resembling dirt. We used black tea for ‘dirt’ and oatmeal and dried lentils for digger craft sensory‘sand’ and ‘rocks’. If your glue is not thick enough the dirt will have a hard time sticking so make sure your artist put it on nice and thick.

Let dry and you have construction worthy textured artwork for the wall!
