fire truck birthday party

Ah - the appeal of firetrucks... doesn't seem to ever get old, even with school-aged kids! Host a fire truck themed birthday party and let kids practice their siren noises (outside, maybe?), life saving skills and water hose abilities! momstown kids always LOVE a fire truck and your kids will too!

Activities

Hold fire truck obstacle races! Build fire trucks from boxes (paint redm glue on "wheels" and "lights", precut a hole on top and open up the bottom for the child to slip in, attach string for staps). Set up a relay race jumping through 'rings of fire' (streamers tied to hula hoops) and other obstacles. Great fun!

Get out the spray and hose down your guests (weather permitting!). They can all take turns being the 'fire fighter'!

If you have a large enough group, your local fire department might be able to send a fire truck to your street for the kids to explore! Contact them to find out. Or, take a small group on an outing to a fire station if time and scheduling permits.

Decorations

Build an Oatmeal Construction Site

What could be more fun at a playgroup or on a rainy day at home, than to make a construction site in your kitchen - using oatmeal! momstown has some great ways to use oatmeal to inspire your kids' creativity and exploration.

construction oatmeal

What you need:

  • Oatmeal (whatever your favourite dry oats is!)
  • Water
  • Cookie sheet (s)
  • Construction toys
  • Cups
  • Blocks

Experiment with the amount of water you add - for different textures and sensory experiences.

Babies can use little cars, plastic spoons and their hands to explore oatmeal - let kids try it out dry, with a bit of water (gets sticky and makes a kind of glue), and then with more and more water... just like a real construction site!

The perfect texture to mimic loads of concrete and a dump truck!

And here's what happens when it rains on the construction site!

momstown has lots of sensory crafts to try with kids of all ages. You can use oatmeal for a great baby's first painting material, try making magic happen with milk, or make edible fingerpaints!

Dump Truck and Playdough Construction

D is for Dumptruck

Use loose tea to make a dumptruck that looks like it has real dirt! Even better, the letter 'D' is the dump bed!

D is for dumptruck

This craft is great for toddlers and preschoolers - they can practice gluing, cutting, shape and letter identification, and get a bit messy too!

D is for dumptruck

What you need:

  • Opened tea bag (recommend that an adult cut it open to avoid too much mess!)
  • Construction paper cut into shapes to build a truck (including a large 'D')
  • Glue
  • Spoon for dirt (tea!)

D is for dumptruck

We assembled most of the dump truck parts on construction paper (glued on) and then got busy creating the dirt!

Cover the 'D' with glue, and then spoon loose tea (cut open bags) on top. When it's finished you can glue it onto the top of the truck.

This would work well for an outdoor playgroup - and you could use different types of 'dirt' - like dried beans, or coffee grounds. momstown Toronto Bloorwest rocked this craft at a Construction-themed playgroup!

momstown has lots of construction crafts, activities, and books to inspire those who love things that move!

Digger Art - this activity goes along well with D for dumptruck, once you've got the 'dirt' on hand!

Egg carton dumptrucks - a fun way to recycle those egg cartons!

Construction books - might just be the thing to inspire a love of reading!

Egg carton dumptrucks

Turn an egg carton into a dump truck that you kids can play with!

egg carton dump truck

Inspired by our friends at DLTK-Kids, this great craft gets kids painting and creating and using their imaginations.

What you need:

  • egg carton
  • small piece of a straw (3 inches)
  • glue
  • scissors
  • paint or markers

Cut three pieces from your egg carton:

1) 1/3 of the top of the egg carton to make the flatbed

2) A 2-cup strip

3) A 6-cup strip

egg carton dump truck

Start with the 6-cup strip. Cut the bottom of the middle two cups off. (This makes the outer cups act as wheels).

egg carton dump truck

Glue the 2-cup strip onto the front of the 6-cup strip (making the 'cab')

Then, glue the base of the dump truck onto the back of the 6-cup strip.  Paint as desired to make it look like you child's favourite dump truck! Maybe they like Muck from Bob the Builder!

R is for Road!

Here's a great, simple idea from momstown for the cars-loving kids in your life! Make a road made out of the letter R!

construction craft alphabet R

This is easy to make with construction paper, glue and stickers. Cut out the letter "R" and glue on white strips for the road lines.

Then decorate with stickers, and you've got a usable road for those dinky cars! We had digger stickers which we pretended were constructing the road, but we made another one later with Lightning McQueen stickers as a race track!

construction craft alphabet R

This got lots of action after the crafting was done!

Taking stickers off sticker sheets is great fine motor practice but can be tricky for young children. Here's a tip: peel off the white sticky 'outline' (the part surrounding the stickers) so all that is left on the sheet are just the stickers to pull off. It makes it a lot easier!

While you're talking construction - why not read these construction themed books? Or keep on crafting with thie digger art project?
