Fancy Mittens

Baby, it's COLD outside! We're all wearing mittens so we might aw well craft about them too! Some of our momstown Edmonton moms shared a great day together and made these craft Mittens while together. Some of the kids went home with a little extra color and glitter on their face and hands!

And all of the kids went home with a very Fancy pair of mittens.

Supplies:

- Heavy paper like construction papercut into mitten shapes

- glue & decorations & markers

- yarn & a hole punch

Cut out mitten shapes & hole punch a hole at the bottom of each. Help your child thread the yarn through and tie so mittens are attached. Then DECORATE as you/they wish! The fancier the better!!

What goes with mittens better than a story about them?? Try reading the classic The Mitten by Jan Brett - great picture book for all youngsters.

Snowmen Indoors!

So, when you love winter, you love snow.  Hearing about all the snow that other parts of Canada are getting right now makes me long for the snow to show up here.  So, craft time rolled around yesterday and all I had on my brain was snow.  If we couldn't go out and make a snowman, I figured we might as well stay inside and make a snowman.

Supplies:

Construction Paper: background & cut into shapes

Glue

Cotton Balls

For this craft, I drew the outline of a three-tiered snowman on a piece of construction paper.  Oliver took some cotton balls and dipped them in some glue and placed them on the snowman.
I cut out boots, stick arms, eyes, carrot nose, top hat, smile, etc. and let my son paste them onto the snowman where he thought they should go!

The finished product was a snowman that we could make indoors, without all the snow that we wish we had! Thanks Lisa from momstown Burlington for this great snowman!

Special holiday trivets

momstown believes that making a handmade Christmas gift is a great way to involve your child in the season of giving- have fun creating these trivets together!

holiday trivet craft

What you need:

  • Ceramic Tile (you can buy these at a hardware store individually or in a case)
  • Tempera paint (Christmas colours)
  • Sharpie marker in red & black to write any seasonal messages
  • Paintbrushes or maybe some seasonal stamps
  • Little handprints :-)
  • Felt & glue
  • Glossy finish spray

Prep the tile by cutting & gluing a piece of felt to fit the back of the tile. You don't want the trivet to scratch anything when you use it on your holiday table!

Get busy painting! momstown Oakville painted Christmas Trees!

momstown Burlington used Christmas stamps. Or you can freehand a painting. Or make a handprint with a cheery Christmas sentiment. Use your creativity to create your own masterpiece with your child.

Christmas Tree Stained Glass

A fun craft from a recent momstown Edmonton South's Connect the Tots playdate that is easy for toddlers and non messy for moms!

What you need:

  • Construction paper (black or green)
  • Tissue paper cut into small pieces
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Scissors

Cut 1 piece of construction paper into a large triagle.  Cut the center from the triangle.  Use a leftover piece to make the "tree stump".

Place the tree on the sticky side of a sheet of contact paper.  Have your child place the tissue pieces inside the triangle.  Layering the tissue and cover all the open space.  Cover with another piece of contact paper and trim.

Here is our momstown mama's window cling beside her daughter's hanging in the window.  Can you tell which is which?  Pretty good.  These look even better when the sun is shining through!

Gum Drop Tree Ornaments

Candy & Crafting? Sound like fun? momstown thinks so!

gum drop tree ornaments

Here's your chance to make some delicious ornaments for the tree that require no baking and no glue!

What you need:

  • Variety of Gum Drops, jube jubes, Sprinkles
  • Toothpicks
  • Fine gauge wire
  • Pliers are helpful as is a sharp knife (keep away from the youngsters obviously)

If you cut the Gum Drops, the cut sides will they will stick together like "glue". Try cutting and resticking peices to create hats, gloves and boots. Use toothpicks to thread and attach arms & legs & bodies. Adults can use wire to fish through the body and loop back up for a hook to attach to the tree.

Be creative and create your own pattern. Have fun creating your own set of gum drops kids for your tree this season!

Idea inspired by Martha Stewart
