Sat, 12/03/2011 - 10:11 To critters and crayons - love the idea of crafts for different celebrations as a teaching tool. I was once asked to come into a 5th grade class to describe Hanukkah celebrations during a "winter holidays around the world" day. Since light and candles are a key part of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, I know there's a craft idea to help children understand the differences -- and underlying history of each holiday. Haven't figured it out yet, though. Can anyone? I'll noodle it today . . .
Mon, 11/28/2011 - 13:50 Thank you Ellen for your great ideas! Especially love how simple the paper chains are - great for all ages.
Mon, 11/28/2011 - 11:18 I also love baking cookies with little hands. As with the paper chain idea, you can adjust the level of activity to suit the age of the child. Even 2-year-olds love to make pre-baked cookies sparkle with blue and silver sprinkles, a cinnamon-and-sugar mixure, or (the classic) colored sugar made by stirring white sugar with a few drops of food coloring until it's a nice consistency. By four, kids can "paint" pre-baked cookies. Just use new, food-safe paint brushes, mix together egg yolk with a little water, divide that mixture into 3 or 4 small bowls, add a few drops of food coloring in each, and let the kids decorate away!
Mon, 11/28/2011 - 11:12 Little ones get a huge kick out of helping to build long, colorful paper chains that you hang from doorways. And you can adjust the children's role by age and ability. In the earliest years (even 2-year-olds can do this!), you precut the strips of construction paper and they choose which colors to put next in the chain. You fasten with tape or staples. Then, over time, they use child-friendly scissors to cut out the construction paper. Even later, they do the whole thing! And by then, my experience is that the chains are HUGE and snake around across whole rooms -- because they enjoy the process so much. You can use traditional blue and white papers -- or give them the whole range of colors to work with. It's fun, inexpensive, and lasts the whole holiday!
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 23:24 Oh- I'm sorry I have no Hannukah crafts! But, what a great idea! If you have any homemade crafts, I would love to invite you link up at the Critters and Crayons linky for Homemade Christmas! Maybe I should have entitled it "Homemade Holidays!" Maybe we'll try a Hannukah-inspired craft- maybe even a Kwanzaa craft- just for education's sake. The kids might really like that!
