Okay - true confessions time. Yes I am one of momstown's 'crafty moms' and post lots of crafts on this blog. However when it comes to crafts that don't involve kids... well, I just don't do them!

Nope, no grownup crafts for me... until one day when my son was home sick and basically lay on the couch all day. I took advantage of the time to do some online browsing of some great ideas on pinterest... and next thing you know, I was making an Advent calendar out of baby socks!

Every year I've wanted to get a fancy advent calendar that I could put treats in myself, instead of the store bought ones we usually get. I've never found something that was just right and at the right price.

So how about free? I did this with minimal craft supplies but I'm pretty impressed with the results!

What you need:

  • 25 (or 24 depending on if you include Christmas day) baby socks
  • Clothespins
  • Ribbon
  • Glue gun
  • Raffi (or ribbon) to string them up
  • Various winter or Christmas stickers

First, I lay out all of the socks. I have 2 boys so my kids' baby socks are not as cute as some, but no worries. I used red dot stickers and wrote the numbers 1 to 25 on them (I know, super fancy!) and glue gunned one on each sock.

Then I decorated each sock with a sticker, bow, ribbon - you can use anything you have on hand! I used lots of snowflake stickers and strips of ribbon.

Finally, I attached each sock with a clothespeg to a string of raffia, and found a good kid-friendly spot to hang my advent socks. Each day during December, my kids will dig into a sock and find some kind of treat!

You could fill the socks with left-over Halloween candy, small toys, or little notes with promises of winter actitivies we'll do together, like tobogganing, making hot chocolate, or making a gingerbread house!

So - what do you think? Is this my first of many 'grownup' crafts or my one and only?
