Penguin mosaic craft

Mosaic crafts are lots of fun! It's a great way to use up all those scraps of paper and let your child's creativity take flight.

penguin mosaic

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • Paper cut into small squares (or any small shapes)
  • Pencil
  • White glue or gluestick
  • Googly eyes

Trace a penguin shape onto construction paper. Outline where the inner 'face' of the penguin will be, along with the neckline and beak.

Start with the black outline - have kids glue black squares all along the outline. Then, glue the red neckline, orange beak, and the rest will be white to fill in for the body and the snowy background. Complete with googly eyes and you've got a cute little penguin!

Snowmen made from mini marshmallows

momstown's got a great fine motor activity for kids of all ages - make a snowman with mini marshmallows.

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • White glue
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Beads or sequins to decorate

mini marshmallow snowmen Outline a snowman shape with glue. Older kids can try this on their own (you can help by tracing with pencil underneath).

Use mini marshmallows and place along the glue - great fine motor practice (beware the escaping marshmallows - yum yum!)

Add nose, mouth, arms, and any accessories with glued-on beads, sequins, or any craft decorations you have handy.  We also painted snowflakes and snow with white paint and Q-tips to add to the snowy landscape!

Make a Lantern for Chinese New Year

momstown loves when we find crafts that work for all ages. Though at first glance this lantern might look tricky, by breaking down the steps and helping little ones with the harder parts, everyone can make a lantern for Chinese New Year!

What you need:

  • Construction paper
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Stapler

The first step is the easiest - and this is why any child can take part! Decorate your construction paper any way you like - with crayons, markers, or paint. It doesn't matter what size of construction paper you use - it will just affect the size of the lantern.

Then, fold the paper so that the picture doesn't show (it's on the inside). A good trick here to help kids cut on their own, is to write a "STOP" line at the top, and either you draw or they draw lines to cut along vertically.

Note that the fold MUST be at the bottom or the lantern won't work.

Once you're finished cutting, open up the paper, it will look like this:

You'll want the design (where your child coloured) on the outside, so you'll have to reverse your initial fold a bit to make the lantern take shape.

Staple the top and bottom, and add a handle if you like!

Happy Chinese New Year!
